The GRC Cauldron is a broad, round bowl planter in glass reinforced concrete, sold in three sizes from 74cm across up to 1.17m. It is the shape for width rather than height, spreading a planting out at ground level instead of stacking it up. The standard finish is a warm corten style rust, with ten sprayed colours behind it.
Why you'll love it
-
Real width at a workable weight. The largest holds 350 litres yet weighs 50kg empty: a two person lift, not a crane job.
-
Rust that reads warm against green. The corten style standard finish sits behind foliage instead of competing with it.
-
Eleven finishes, or a colour of your own. Custom sprays use Dulux Weathershield, guaranteed 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking.
-
Built for group planting. The open bowl takes an upright centre with something spilling over the rim.
Sizes and what fits in them
All measurements are outside dimensions, diameter by height, with volume and weight.
-
74 x 36cm, 80 litres, 25kg. Succulents, a low mounding grass, or a single clipped ball.
-
97 x 46cm, 150 litres, 34kg. A mixed planting of three or four shrubs, or one established specimen with underplanting.
-
117 x 52cm, 350 litres, 50kg. A small feature tree, or a full planting that anchors a courtyard.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Glass reinforced concrete: a concrete skin cast over glass fibre, which is why a 1.17m bowl weighs 50kg rather than several hundred.
Outdoors. Built for outdoor installation, commercial sites included. The weathering guarantee sits in the coating rather than the concrete: Dulux Weathershield sprays are covered 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking. We publish no frost rating for the body, so in hard frost districts keep it clear of standing water.
Drainage. It has drainage holes and they must stay clear. Raise it on feet, screen the holes with fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric, which clogs, then add 50mm of 10mm gravel and a premium potting mix, never garden soil. Aggressive roots damage any planter, so choose plants suited to pots. Under cover, use a saucer.
What to expect when it arrives
Pots ship empty and unplanted. Rust finish stock is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days, while custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Decide where the 117 x 52cm size goes first: 50kg empty and 350 litres of mix, it will not move again.
