The Mirror Holland Planter is a glazed ceramic pot in the traditional Holland shape, a flared bowl as wide across the rim as it is tall. It comes in two sizes, 370mm and 450mm, both finished in a high lustre glaze that throws light back rather than absorbing it. It is a display pot first: bulbs, annuals and anything seasonal look right in it.
Why you'll love it
-
A glaze that catches light. The high lustre surface stays visible in a shaded courtyard where a matte pot disappears into the background.
-
Proportions that suit flowers. Equal width and height gives a wide rim and a generous soil volume, which is what a mass of annuals or bulbs wants.
-
Fired ceramic weight. Ceramic has mass to it, which matters on a windy balcony where a tall plant in a light pot goes over.
-
Drainage already there. A drainage hole is included, so it can be planted directly instead of serving only as a cover pot.
Sizes and what fits in them
Both sizes are symmetrical from every angle, which is why they work as a matched pair.
-
370mm. 37cm across and 37cm tall, holding roughly 40 to 45 litres of mix. Flowering annuals, bulbs and foliage plants.
-
450mm. 45cm across and 45cm tall, holding roughly 70 to 75 litres. Feature plants, shrubs and statement displays.
Bought in pairs at either size they flank a doorway or a set of steps well.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Glazed ceramic in a mirror high lustre finish. Wipe it with a damp cloth or rinse it gently. The glaze needs no sealing.
Outdoors. Suitable for outdoor and indoor positions, so patios, courtyards, balconies and alfresco areas all work. We hold no frost rating for it, and any glazed ceramic left full of wet mix through hard frosts is at risk, so in cold districts move it under cover for winter.
Drainage. One drainage hole, no saucer supplied, and no self watering reservoir. Indoors, stand it on a saucer to protect timber and stone, and empty that once the pot has drained.
What to expect when it arrives
The planter arrives empty and packed for transit, with no plant, mix or saucer included. Ceramic travels well boxed but should be unpacked and checked before it is carried far. The 450mm is a two person job once it holds 75 litres of wet mix, so decide where it lives first. Planters are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
