Royal Poinciana

The royal poinciana (Delonix regia) is the summer flowering shade tree that defines a tropical street. Given open ground it reaches around 10m tall with a canopy just as wide, and through the hottest months it fills with scarlet and orange flowers. It is fast growing and thrives on heat, but it is frost tender, so this is a tree for tropical and subtropical gardens only.

Where it works best

This is a big tree. It earns its place on acreage, large blocks, parks and school grounds, anywhere a 10m canopy is an asset rather than a problem. As a driveway or avenue tree, plant 10m to 12m apart; as a single lawn feature it works even better, because you can walk under it.

One honest warning: the roots are broad and shallow, so they lift paving and find pipes. Keep the trunk at least 8m from buildings, paths, pools and services. The seed pods are not pet safe, so rake them up if you have a dog that chews.

Growing royal poinciana in Australia

Climate, and where it will not grow

Tropical and subtropical gardens only. It suits far north and coastal Queensland, northern New South Wales and tropical northern Western Australia. Frost kills young trees, so in cool southern gardens around Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra or Hobart it will not make a tree. Choose a frost hardy shade tree instead.

Position and soil

Full sun, all day. It is not fussy about soil provided drainage is good, and it copes well with sandy coastal ground. Avoid heavy clay that stays wet through the wet season.

Watering, feeding and pruning

Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, then only in extended dry spells. A slow release fertiliser in early spring is plenty; go easy on high nitrogen lawn feeds, which push leaf at the expense of flower. Prune while the tree is young to build one strong leader and well spaced limbs, because long horizontal branches carry real weight later on.

Common questions

Can I grow one in Melbourne, Adelaide or Hobart?

No. It is frost tender and needs tropical or subtropical conditions to survive and flower. In cool southern gardens it rarely recovers from its first winter.

How long before it flowers?

Usually three to five years from planting, and heaviest in full sun on a tree not fed hard with nitrogen. Larger container sizes give you a head start.

Does it lose its leaves?

Yes. Expect thinning or full leaf drop in winter and the dry season, then a fresh flush in spring ahead of flowering.

How soon will it give me shade?

A usable canopy takes about five to eight years from an advanced tree, fastest if you water deeply while it establishes.
