The Holman Aspect Wireless Data Centre is a home weather station with an outdoor sensor and an indoor LCD display. It reads wind speed and direction, rainfall, humidity, barometric pressure and both indoor and outdoor temperature, and sends it all to the display wirelessly from up to 50 metres away. It suits a gardener who wants conditions in their own garden rather than the forecast for the nearest airport.

What it does

  • Reads your own conditions. Every reading lands on one 165mm LCD panel with a digital clock and calendar.
  • Runs without the internet. The outdoor unit transmits over its own wireless link at up to 50 metres. No Wi-Fi, no app and no account, so nothing stops working when the network does.
  • Warns and forecasts. Temperature alarms flag a reading against a limit you set, and barometric trend forecasts where conditions are heading.
  • Cordless and battery powered. Four AA batteries run the system, in a plastic and aluminium housing made to sit outside.

How to use it

Mount the outdoor sensor in the open, away from walls, eaves and paving. A sensor tucked under a roofline reads warm and catches no rain. Keep it within 50 metres of the display and confirm the signal holds through the walls in between before you fix the bracket permanently.

Fit the four AA batteries and replace them once readings start dropping out. Wipe the display and the sensors with a dry cloth, and clear leaf litter from the rain gauge funnel so it keeps measuring accurately.

What it suits

Use for watering and frost decisions. Knowing how much rain actually fell tells you whether to water, and knowing the overnight low tells you whether frost tender plants need cover.

Use for indoor monitoring. It tracks indoor temperature and humidity alongside the outdoor readings, which is as useful for indoor plants as it is for people.

Not a connected or expandable system. It supports one outdoor sensor, has no internet connection and no app, and does not report dew point. If you want remote access or irrigation automation, a Wi-Fi station is the one to look at. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
