The Black Growers Water Planter is an Australian made plastic grower pot designed around root development: the form encourages a fibrous, non girdling root system rather than roots that spiral around the wall of the pot. It sells in two sizes, 143mm and 300mm, holding about 2 litres and about 14 to 16 litres of mix.

Sizes and what fits in them

Two sizes, and they cover opposite ends of a plant's early life.

  • 143mm. 14.3cm wide and 14.3cm deep, 16cm high, holding about 2 litres. Seedlings, cuttings, herbs and small indoor plants.
  • 300mm. 30cm wide and 30cm deep, 23cm high, about 14 to 16 litres. Shrubs, foliage plants, larger herbs and advanced plants being grown on.

If you are between the two, the 300mm gives more root volume and better long term plant health.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Black plastic in a grower grade weight, built to take frequent watering and handling. Rinse or wipe it out between plants.

Outdoors. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, in the garden, on a balcony or in a nursery setting. It is a working pot, so expect the surface to scuff with use rather than stay showroom black.

Drainage. Drainage holes are built in. Despite the name, this is not a self watering pot: there is no reservoir, and you water it like any other container. No saucer is included, so put one underneath if it is standing on an indoor floor.

What to expect when it arrives
