The Atlantis Tall U Planter is a tall, straight sided planter in hand made aged ceramic, double fired in Vietnam for frost resistance. Three sizes run from 38 x 48cm holding 30 litres to 37 x 85cm holding 90 litres. It is a heavy pot for its size, which is exactly what you want against wind on a balcony or a corner of the drive.

Why you'll love it

  • Thick walled and stable. The smallest size weighs 55kg empty at only 30 litres of volume, and the largest is 105kg. Nothing is blowing these over.
  • Vertical without bulk. Under 40cm across in every size, so it fits a narrow bed, a landing or the gap between windows.
  • Frost resistant. Double firing closes up the ceramic body, which is what allows it outside in cold country.
  • Aged glaze, hand finished. Texture and tone move across the surface and no two pots are identical.

Three sizes, given as outside width by height.

  • 38 x 48cm, 30 litres, 55kg empty. Good for a compact shrub, a clipped ball, a cordyline or a mass of succulents.
  • 40 x 70cm, 60 litres, 70kg empty. The useful middle size. Takes a dwarf citrus, a bird of paradise or a slim conifer.
  • 37 x 85cm, 90 litres, 105kg empty. The tall one. Best with something upright and architectural, or a trailing plant that can spill down the full height.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Aged ceramic, hand made and double fired in Vietnam. The finish is meant to look weathered from the start, so expect variation between pieces.

Outdoors. Frost resistant and made to live outside, where the aged glaze carries on weathering. Set it on pot feet so water can clear the base.

Drainage. The pot is drilled. Keep the holes open, lay a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen over each one rather than fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then 50mm of 10mm gravel before a premium potting mix. Garden soil packs down and should not be used. Inside, it drains freely, so put a tray under it.
