The Atlantis Crucible is a tall, narrow based ceramic planter, handmade in Vietnam and double fired, finished in the aged glaze that runs through the Atlantis range. It comes in two sizes, 26cm x 42cm and 34cm x 49cm, holding 20 and 30 litres. The tapered shape lifts a plant without taking up floor, which suits either side of a door or a narrow wall.

Measurements are outside diameter by height, and the base is narrower than the rim.

  • 26cm x 42cm, 20 litres, 10kg. The smaller of the two, sized for a clipped ball, a compact standard, a cordyline, or a trailing plant.
  • 34cm x 49cm, 30 litres, 20kg. Root volume for a small topiary, a dwarf citrus or an upright grass, with height to read as a feature.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Handmade ceramic from Vietnam, double fired, with an aged glaze applied by hand. Colour and texture vary between pieces, so a pair will be close, not identical.

Outdoors. The double firing gives it frost resistance, so a planted Crucible can stay out through a cold season. The finish is designed to look weathered. Because the base is narrow and the pot is tall, keep it on level ground and out of strong wind once it is top heavy.

Drainage. It has drainage holes. Keep them clear and raise the pot on feet. Cover the holes with fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix, never garden soil. Indoors it needs a saucer.

Pots ship empty and unplanted, wrapped and boxed for freight. The 34cm x 49cm size is 20kg before mix goes in, still a single person lift.
