Callistemon Rose Opal

Callistemon 'Rose Opal' (Callistemon hybrid 'Rose Opal') is a compact Australian native bottlebrush that settles at about 1.5m tall and wide, so it hedges or fills a bed without ever needing a hard cut back. Deep rose pink brushes cover the plant in spring, and honeyeaters find them within days. It also handles the two extremes most shrubs cannot: a spot that floods after rain, and a season with no rain at all.

Growing Callistemon 'Rose Opal' in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering; part shade works but you lose brushes. It performs across subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and arid or semi-arid gardens, which is most of the settled country. Frost hardy once established.

Soil. Genuinely adaptable. It handles clay, sand and poor soil, and unlike most natives it forgives ground that holds water after rain. Mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Water twice weekly through the first summer, then only in extended dry spells. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring, and go lightly: standard garden fertilisers can damage the roots.

Pruning. Trim straight after each flush, taking the spent brushes off with about 10cm of stem. That single habit keeps a callistemon dense instead of woody and open at the base. It reshoots from old wood, so a neglected plant can be cut back hard and will recover.

What to expect when it arrives
