Tubestock

When you need to plant in volume, whether that is a 30m hedge, a revegetation project or a whole new garden from scratch, tubestock is the smartest money you can spend. These young plants in 50mm to 75mm tubes cost a fraction of advanced stock, and because they establish in the ground rather than in a pot, they routinely catch up to much larger plants within one to two growing seasons.

The economics are simple: root systems, not top growth, determine long term performance. A tubestock plant goes into the soil with a young, uncircled root system that adapts immediately to your site, while larger potted plants spend their first year recovering from transplant. For hedges and screens, plan on 3 to 4 tubes per metre for a dense result, and for garden beds and mass planting, spacing at 50cm to 80cm centres fills out surprisingly fast. Landscapers ordering for client jobs should factor in that tubestock also cuts planting labour dramatically, since each hole takes seconds rather than minutes to dig.

• Soak tubes in a bucket of water for 10 minutes before planting so the root plug is fully wet
• Plant within a few days of delivery, as tubes dry out faster than larger pots
• Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, then taper off as plants establish
• Mulch to 50mm to 75mm, keeping it clear of stems, to suppress the weeds that compete hardest with young plants
• Stagger a double row for hedges if you want maximum density from day one
