Yates Specialty Potting Mix for Cacti and Succulents is a 2.5L bag of coarse, sandy mix built to drain fast. It is blended for plants that store their own water and rot when the medium stays wet, and it carries a controlled release fertiliser feeding for up to six months. One bag fills about two 14cm pots.

What it does

  • Water passes straight through. The coarse sandy blend is free draining, which is what keeps a succulent out of the waterlogged conditions that cause root rot.
  • Feeding without forcing. Controlled release fertiliser is included and feeds for up to six months, so plants that grow slowly by nature are not left to starve in inert grit.
  • Something for the roots. A biostimulant is blended through to encourage strong roots and general plant health.
  • Resealable for a collection. Succulent growers pot one plant at a time, and the stand-up bag reseals so the remainder stores upright without spilling.

How to use it

At 2.5L a bag fills roughly two 14cm pots, so buy by the number of pots you plan to fill rather than by weight. Fill the pot with mix, set the plant in place, firm it lightly and leave the crown sitting at the surface rather than buried.

Water from the bottom of the pot where you can, standing it in a saucer until the mix has drawn moisture up, which avoids wetting the foliage. Then let the mix dry out before watering again. When repotting, replace the old mix completely rather than adding fresh material on top.

What it suits

Potted cacti and succulents. The correct drainage and structure for these plants is the entire reason this blend differs from a standard mix.

Indoor collections. Windowsill displays work well in it provided the watering is disciplined, since a pot indoors dries far more slowly than one outside.

Balconies, patios and repotting jobs. Sheltered outdoor containers and propagating on from cuttings both suit the same open blend.
