Yates Plants and Ferns Specialty Potting Mix is a 2.5L bag of premium mix blended for indoor potted plants and ferns. It is Australian Standard Premium Red Tick approved and carries a controlled release fertiliser that feeds for up to six months. One bag fills roughly two 14cm pots, the scale most repotting jobs actually run to.

What it does

  • Premium grade, certified. The mix is Australian Standard Premium Red Tick approved, so the contents are held to a published specification.
  • Six months of feeding. Controlled release fertiliser is mixed through the blend, so a freshly potted plant is fed for up to half a year before liquid feeding matters.
  • Root support from the start. A biostimulant is included in the formulation to encourage strong roots and healthy growth.
  • Moisture held steady. The blend is built for indoor plants and ferns, which want consistent moisture rather than the sharp drainage a succulent needs.

How to use it

Work from the pot count rather than the litres: at 2.5L a bag fills about two 14cm pots, so a shelf of six small plants needs three bags. Part fill the pot, sit the plant in at the depth it was already growing, backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly to settle the mix.

When you repot, replace the old mix completely instead of topping up around a solid root ball. Spent mix has collapsed and holds water where you least want it. Reseal the stand-up bag so the rest keeps for the next pot.

What it suits

Houseplants in small pots. Indoor greenery living in the modest pot sizes this bag is measured against is the main use.

Ferns and shade foliage. These plants resent drying out between waterings, and the structure and moisture balance here suits them better than a general outdoor mix.

Balconies and covered areas. Sheltered containers outdoors behave much like indoor pots, so the same mix works on a covered patio.
