The Tumbleweed Worm Cafe is a high capacity tray worm farm that turns household organic waste into worm castings and liquid fertiliser. Australian designed and made, it processes 5 to 6kg of kitchen waste a week across three large working trays. It suits a family kitchen, and a first time worm farmer as readily as an experienced one.

What it does

  • Real household volume. Three large working trays let the colony spread out, which is how it keeps up with 5 to 6kg of waste a week.
  • Two products, not one. The ventilated collector tray gathers liquid for the drip free tap, while the finished trays above hold castings.
  • Airflow through the whole stack. The hinged lid and the trays are both ventilated, so conditions stay aerobic and the farm stays odourless when it is run correctly.
  • Sensible details. Four ant proof legs, a built in worm mound in the collector tray and a hinged lid you can open with one hand.

How to use it

Assembly is required and straightforward. The kit includes the ventilated hinged lid, three working trays, the collector tray with its worm mound, the tap and nut set, four legs, a bedding block and an instruction manual with a worm farming guide. Soak the bedding block, load the first tray and add worms. Worms are not supplied: you will need roughly 1,000 composting worms to start. Feed fruit and vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, bread crusts, grains, shredded paper and cardboard and dried leaves, with citrus, onion and garlic only in small amounts. Drain the tap regularly rather than letting liquid sit.

What it suits

Under cover, indoors. A laundry, garage or shed works well, and the ant proof legs earn their keep on a hard floor.

Balconies and small courtyards. It stands on its own legs and needs no garden bed, so an apartment can compost properly. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Feeding a productive garden. Castings and liquid both go back into vegetable beds and borders, which is where a system this size pays off.

It is not a garden waste composter. Lawn clippings, prunings and branches belong in a compost bin.
