The Tumbleweed 400L Gedye Compost Bin is the large unit in the Gedye range, made in Australia for gardens that generate real volumes of organic waste. Four hundred litres swallows lawn clippings, garden trimmings and kitchen scraps together, and the clip-on lid keeps insects out of the contents between loads.

What it does

Capacity is the whole argument for this size. A big lawn produces more green waste in one weekend than a small bin holds in a month, and a bin that is constantly full stops being used. It also gives the pile the mass to hold heat through the middle, which speeds the breakdown of coarse prunings and thick clippings.

The construction is durable plastic and stays light for its size, so an empty bin is still a one person job to carry into position. The lid clips on rather than resting loose, keeping the contents contained and insects out.

How to use it

Choose the position before you start filling, on level ground and directly on soil so worms can move up into the base. Load garden waste, lawn clippings and kitchen scraps together rather than tipping in a full catcher of grass on its own, because clippings alone compact into a wet mat. Clip the lid back down after each load. Turn the pile regularly with a compost aerator to move air into the centre, and harvest the dark crumbly material from the bottom to enrich beds, borders and vegetable soil.

What it suits

Large blocks and acreage gardens. Where mowing and pruning produce barrow loads rather than bucket loads, this is the capacity that keeps up.

Productive vegetable gardens. Heavy cropping strips organic matter out of soil every season, and a bin this size returns enough compost to matter across several beds.

Households diverting green waste. Lawn and garden material is bulky in a kerbside bin, so processing it on site is worth more than any other single change.

It is not portable once it is working. Filled to 400 litres the bin stays where you put it until it is emptied, so the spot needs to be right on day one. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.
