Osmocote Premium Plus Superior Potting Mix is a 50 litre bag built around two ideas: feed the plant for a long time, and hold water where the roots can reach it. It carries controlled release Osmocote fertiliser plus water storing crystals, which makes it a sensible default for anyone potting up a batch of plants at once. It is delivered Australia wide, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

What it does

  • Feeds for up to six months. Controlled release Osmocote granules are already blended through the bag, so most plants need no extra feeding at all during that first six month window.
  • Holds water in the root zone. The mix includes water crystals that take up as much as 100 times their own weight in moisture and hand it back gradually, which stretches the interval between waterings in a hot week.
  • Wets evenly. An added wetting agent keeps water and dissolved nutrient moving through the whole pot rather than channelling down one side and out the drainage holes.
  • Peat free. The bag uses ScottsCoir, a coir based replacement for traditional peat that improves both water retention and structure.

How to use it

Fill the pot or container, plant directly into the mix, and water thoroughly to settle it around the roots. Fifty litres fills roughly two 300mm pots, or most of a single 400mm planter, so work out your total before you order rather than after.

Ease off on watering once plants are established. The crystals mean the mix stays damp longer than a standard potting mix, and the usual mistake is watering to the old routine and drowning the roots. Check the top few centimetres with a finger first.

What it suits

General potting and repotting. Pots and containers indoors and out, across flowering plants, foliage plants and general repotting work. Trace elements and growth stimulants in the blend support root development in newly potted stock.

Irregular watering. Positions where watering is irregular, such as a balcony you only get to on weekends, or an exposed courtyard that dries out fast.

Not for. Orchids, cacti and succulents want a coarser, faster draining medium than this. A moisture holding mix works against them.
