Scotts Osmocote Cacti and Succulent Premium Potting Mix is a 25 litre bag of free draining medium formulated for plants that die from too much water rather than too little. Coarse material through the blend lets excess water pass straight out of the pot, while Osmocote controlled release fertiliser feeds for up to six months. It is certified to meet the Australian Standard for premium potting mixes.

What it does

  • Drainage first. Coarse particles keep the structure open so water leaves quickly, and that alone is what protects cacti and succulent roots from rot.
  • Boosted calcium. The extra encourages larger flowers, richer colour, and better resistance to root rot and disease.
  • Six month controlled release feed. Osmocote prills give up nutrient slowly, so slow growing plants get a steady trickle rather than a surge they cannot use.
  • Soil wetter through the blend. Free draining media are the hardest to rewet once dry, and the wetting agent keeps water soaking evenly instead of channelling down one side.

How to use it

Fill the pot, plant directly into the mix and water lightly once. Do not soak a newly potted cactus or succulent: roots are usually disturbed at potting, and wet media around damaged tissue is how rot starts. From then on, let the mix dry out between waterings rather than keeping it damp. Twenty five litres fills roughly one 300mm pot, or a shelf of small pots and bowls. Choose containers with open drainage holes, because no mix can drain a pot that cannot.

What it suits

Cactus collections. Potting on and repotting both go straight into it, with no added sand or grit needed to sharpen the drainage.

Moisture sensitive succulents. Anything that sulks in a general potting mix does better here, indoors in bright light or outside in the open.
