Scotts Osmocote for Roses, Gardenias, Azaleas and Camellias is a controlled release granular fertiliser made for acid loving plants and the roses that usually share a bed with them. One application feeds for up to six months, releasing nutrient steadily rather than in a flush that fades within a fortnight. The 1kg pack works in garden beds and containers alike.

What it does

  • Up to six months of feeding. The granules release nutrient gradually rather than all at once, so growth stays even instead of surging then stalling.
  • Iron and magnesium for leaf colour. Acid lovers show trouble in the foliage first. Added iron and magnesium, with full trace elements behind them, keep leaves deep green rather than pale.
  • A wetting agent in the blend. The professional wetting agent helps water reach the roots instead of running off the surface, which matters in an older pot where the mix has gone water repellent.
  • Less lost to leaching. Release is tied to what the plant is drawing on, so less washes past the root zone in heavy rain.

How to use it

Spread the granules evenly around the base of the plant, out where the feeder roots are rather than against the stem, then water in well. It is safe to apply at planting time, as you backfill a new rose. Rates are printed on the pack and vary with plant and pot size, so measure from there. Note the date, because the next application falls due six months on.
