Scotts Osmocote Premium Plus Superior Potting Mix is the top of the Osmocote potting range, sold here in a 10 litre bag. It pairs controlled release fertiliser that feeds for up to six months with water crystals and a wetting agent, so pots hold moisture longer between waterings. One bag suits a single repot or a few hanging baskets, across ornamentals, edibles and foliage plants alike.

What it does

  • Six months of feeding built in. Osmocote prills release nutrient steadily rather than in a flush, which is why potted plants hold colour instead of yellowing off mid season.
  • Water crystals holding up to 100 times their weight. They take up water when you irrigate and give it back as the mix dries, cutting how often a pot needs attention.
  • ScottsCoir in place of peat. A premium peat alternative that improves water retention during hot conditions, which is when container plants fail.
  • Trace elements and growth stimulants. Both are added to the blend to drive root development in the weeks straight after planting.

How to use it

Use it straight from the bag. There is no need to add sand, compost or extra fertiliser, and doing so only dilutes a blend that is already balanced. Fill the pot, plant, then water thoroughly: that first soaking activates the wetting agent and starts the fertiliser prills working. Ten litres fills about one 250mm pot, or five to six 150mm pots. After six months the built in feed is spent, so switch to a controlled release fertiliser if the plant is staying put.

What it suits

Indoor and outdoor containers. Anything in a pot on a balcony, a patio or a windowsill grows in it, which is why one small bag covers most household jobs.

Hanging baskets. These dry faster than anything else in a garden, and the crystals and wetter buy back real time between waterings.
