Scotts Osmocote Cacti and Succulent Premium Potting Mix is a free draining 10 litre blend built for plants that will not tolerate wet feet. Coarse material through the mix lets excess water clear the root zone quickly, and controlled release fertiliser feeds for up to 6 months. It is certified to the Australian Standard for premium potting mixes.

What it does

  • Drains fast. Added coarse material keeps the blend open so water moves through instead of sitting around the roots, which is the most common way potted succulents are lost.
  • Wets evenly. A wetting agent is included, so a mix that has dried right out takes water again rather than shedding it down the side of the pot.
  • Feeds for up to 6 months. Scotts Osmocote controlled release fertiliser is already blended through it.
  • Boosted with calcium. Scotts credit the added calcium with larger flowers, bolder colour and improved disease resistance.
  • Certified premium. It meets the Australian Standard for premium potting mixes, the benchmark worth checking on any bagged mix.

How to use it

Ten litres is roughly one 250mm pot, or a pair of 200mm pots, so work out your bag count before you start. Part fill the pot, sit the plant at the depth it was already growing, backfill and firm lightly. Do not compact it, because the air space is the point. When repotting, shake the old mix off the roots and replace it completely rather than topping up around it. Water sparingly and let the mix dry between waterings, and give the pot a bright position.

What it suits

Cacti and succulents in containers. Indoors on a bright sill, or outdoors on a balcony, patio or sheltered courtyard where the pot is protected from long soaking rain.

Repotting projects. Refreshing a plant that has been sitting in old collapsed mix is the fastest improvement you can make to a struggling succulent.

Not a general potting mix. It is deliberately lean and sharp, so ferns, most indoor foliage and anything wanting constant moisture will dry out too hard in it. Bagged mixes are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.
