Neutrog Bush Tucker is a complete, organically based granular fertiliser built specifically for Australian native plants. It was developed with native plant authority Angus Stewart and soil scientist Simon Leake, and its phosphorus level is set low enough to be safe for phosphorus sensitive varieties. The 4kg bag is the practical size for a garden with a real native planting in it.

What it does

  • Low phosphorus by design. Many natives evolved on ancient, phosphorus poor soils and struggle on general garden fertilisers. This one is formulated to be safe for phosphorus sensitive plants.
  • Organically based, chemically boosted. Organic inputs carry the soil conditioning side, and targeted nutrient boosting makes it a complete feed rather than a partial one.
  • Granular and even. A granular product spreads accurately by hand around a shrub, which matters more with natives than with anything else in the garden.
  • Developed by people who grow natives. The Angus Stewart and Simon Leake collaboration is the difference between a native label and a native formulation.

How to use it

Apply evenly around the base of the plant, spreading the granules out over the root zone rather than piling them against the stem, then water in well so the nutrients move down into the soil rather than sitting on dry mulch. At planting time, incorporate it into the soil of the planting hole and the surrounding backfill. Reapply as required through the growing season to keep growth steady. Follow the application rates printed on the bag: they are set per plant size and per situation, and they are the figures to work from.

What it suits

Phosphorus sensitive plantings. Native gardens generally, and grevilleas, banksias and callistemons in particular, which are the genera most often set back by a standard fertiliser.
