Hortico Water Storage Crystals are a soil additive that holds water at the root zone and releases it back to the plant as the mix dries out. One 500g pack treats up to 500 litres of potting mix, enough for a courtyard of containers or a solid run of garden bed. It is for gardeners on tank water, on a hot balcony, or anywhere a pot dries out faster than they can get to it.

What it does

  • Holds up to 400 times its own weight in water. The dry granules swell into a gel as they absorb, then hand that moisture back to the roots growing through them.
  • Treats up to 500 litres of potting mix. A 500g pack covers a lot of ground.
  • Stays effective for up to 5 years. No reapplying every season, and the crystals are biodegradable, breaking down harmlessly once spent.
  • Widens the gap between waterings. Less of what you apply drains straight past the roots and out the bottom of the pot.

How to use it

Blend the crystals evenly through potting mix or garden soil before planting. Work from the coverage figure on the pack: 500g across 500 litres is about a gram per litre, so a 30 litre pot needs very little. Water thoroughly after application to swell the crystals and activate them.

For established plants, make several holes around the root zone with a stake, drop the granules in and water them in. Do not overdose. Too much gel lifts the mix as it swells and can push a plant proud of its pot.

What it suits

Pots and open ground. Containers, hanging baskets and planters, where the whole soil volume dries out between waterings, and garden beds and lawns in hot, exposed positions.
