Garden Basics Tomato and Vegetable Growing Mix is a 25 litre container mix for edibles: tomatoes, herbs and vegetables grown in pots rather than in the ground. It is an open draining blend complying with AS4419, the Australian Standard for regular grade potting mixes.

What it does

  • Formulated for edible crops. Put together for tomatoes, vegetables and herbs, which want a medium that stays open under constant watering through a season.
  • Open draining structure. Water passes through rather than pooling, which is what keeps roots working in a pot watered daily in summer.
  • AS4419 regular grade. It meets the Australian Standard for regular grade potting mixes, a step below premium grade and priced accordingly.
  • No long term fertiliser. There is no controlled release feed in the bag, so you choose the fertiliser and control the feeding from day one.

How to use it

One 25L bag fills roughly one 300mm pot, or a pair of 250mm pots. A single tomato wants the larger of those; leafy greens and herbs are content in the smaller. Fill the container without packing it down, plant, then water through until it runs from the drainage holes. Because there is no long term feed in the bag, start a balanced fertiliser at potting time and keep it on a regular cycle. Vegetables in pots are hungry, and nutrient leaves a container with every watering. Use it to top up established pots as the mix settles, and start each new crop in fresh material rather than spent.

Potted tomatoes. One plant in a large container needs a medium that drains hard and still holds together as the root system fills it out.

Leafy greens and herbs. Lettuce, rocket, basil and parsley are shallow rooted and short lived, so a regular grade mix plus your own feeding runs a rotation of small pots economically. Bags are delivered Australia wide, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Where it stops. This is a container mix, not a garden soil and not a premium grade product. In an open bed, compost through your existing soil does more for less, and if you want feed already blended in, choose the premium potting mix.
