Garden Basics 25L Compost is a straightforward soil conditioner for gardeners who want better ground rather than a quick fix. Worked through a bed it adds organic matter, improves structure and lifts the soil's ability to hold moisture, which is the groundwork behind almost every other gardening result. It is suited to vegetable beds, ornamental borders and fruit trees.

What it does

  • Improves soil structure. Organic matter opens up the soil and improves aeration and texture, giving roots somewhere to run instead of hitting a compacted layer.
  • Increases water retention. Soil carrying more organic matter holds moisture for longer between waterings, which shows up most in summer and in sandy ground.
  • Returns nutrients and organic matter. Every crop and every clean up takes something out of a bed. Compost puts it back, which is what keeps soil fertile over years rather than seasons.
  • Safe across edibles and ornamentals. The same bag works for vegetables, fruit trees and flowering plants, so there is no need to stock a different product for each part of the garden.

How to use it

Twenty five litres spread 25mm deep covers about a square metre. That makes one bag a sensible dressing for a small bed or the root zone of a single fruit tree, and several bags the starting point for a new vegetable garden.

When preparing a new bed, mix it thoroughly into the existing garden soil before planting rather than leaving it as a distinct layer. On established beds, apply it to the surface and work it in lightly around plants. Water well after application so the compost settles in and starts working into the soil profile instead of drying out on top.
