Garden Basics All Purpose Potting Mix is an open, free draining blend for anything grown in a container, indoors or out. It is made to AS3743 as a regular standard potting mix, and the 25 litre bag weighs 12kg, so it is light enough to carry and pour without help. It is the sensible default for potting up, repotting and topping up containers.

What it does

  • Drains instead of holding. The open structure lets water move through the pot rather than sit around the roots, which is what kills most container plants.
  • Made to AS3743. It meets the Australian Standard for a regular standard potting mix, so the structure and drainage are to specification rather than a guess.
  • Consistent texture. It pours and settles evenly, so there are no lumps to break up and no air pockets left under the root ball.
  • One mix for the whole collection. Houseplants, patio and balcony pots, hanging baskets, and fruit and vegetables grown in tubs all take it.

How to use it

Twenty five litres fills roughly one 300mm pot, two 250mm pots or about six 200mm pots, so measure your containers before deciding how many bags you need. Part fill the pot, sit the plant so the top of the root ball finishes just below the rim, backfill around it and firm gently rather than packing it down. Water through until it runs from the drainage holes.

Because this is a regular standard mix rather than a premium grade, add a balanced fertiliser at planting and work to the rate on its label. Refresh or replace the mix as plants grow and the pot fills with roots. Reseal the bag and store it cool and dry.

Use. Indoor pots, balcony and courtyard containers, hanging baskets, and herbs, vegetables and fruit grown in tubs. The light, free draining structure matters most in elevated planters, where weight counts.
