The Coco Roll Basket Liner is a sheet of pressed coco fibre, 1000mm wide by 750mm high and 13mm thick, cut to fit hanging baskets, window boxes and wire troughs. It holds water without leaving roots sitting in it, and it replaces peat moss with a material that lasts and then breaks down cleanly.

What it does

  • Holds up to eight times its weight in water. Hanging baskets dry out faster than anything else in the garden, and this slows the swing between soaked and bone dry.
  • Drains and breathes at once. The porous fibre structure lets excess water out and air in, so roots get oxygen instead of sitting waterlogged.
  • Natural coco fibre, neutral pH. A long lasting, biodegradable alternative to peat moss, with anti-fungal qualities and naturally occurring nutrients of its own.
  • Cuts and shapes with scissors. One roll fits most planter sizes with minimal effort, and it is reusable until the fibres degrade.

How to use it

Measure the basket first, then cut the liner and press it into the frame, overlapping the joins so no potting mix escapes at the seams. At 1000mm by 750mm the sheet covers a large hanging basket or a run of window box in one piece, and it cuts down neatly into several small baskets from the same roll.

Once the liner is in, add potting mix and plant straight into it. For side planting, cut small slits through the fibre and feed the roots through from the outside. Replace the liner when the fibres have naturally broken down, which shows up as the shape sagging rather than on a fixed schedule.

Overhead planting. Hanging baskets and hayrack troughs on metal or wire frames. This is what the material was made for: a breathable insert with no plastic against the root ball.

Ledges and sills. Window boxes and outdoor planters, where it retains moisture through a hot afternoon while letting the excess drain away.

It is designed for outdoor planting containers, so it is the wrong choice for an indoor pot on a floor you care about: water passes straight through.
