Brunnings Horticultural Charcoal is a 5 litre bag of soil improver for pots, tubs and containers. Blended through a mix it opens up the structure so water and air move rather than sit, and it helps sweeten soil that has gone sour in a long standing container. It is ready to use straight from the bag.

What it does

  • Improves drainage and airflow. Charcoal particles hold open space in a mix, which is precisely what a container loses as the mix ages, settles and compacts.
  • Sweetens the soil. It helps balance conditions in potting mix that has been sitting in the same pot for a long time.
  • Assists with soil bacteria. Brunnings state that charcoal assists in reducing disease causing organisms in the mix.
  • Nothing added. No wetting agent and no added fertiliser. It does not carry the Australian Standards potting mix ticks, red or black, because it is an additive rather than a mix in its own right.

How to use it

Blend it evenly through potting mix before you plant, or lay it into the base of the pot and mix it up into the soil above. The rate is left to the gardener: use more where a mix is heavy or a pot has been draining poorly, less where the mix is already open and free draining. Keep watering as you normally would, since charcoal changes how the mix drains rather than how often the plant wants a drink.

Five litres is a small, concentrated bag. Treat it as something you add to the mix for particular pots, not as a bulk amendment for garden beds, where the volume would disappear without doing much.

Use. Pots, tubs and planters, especially long term container plantings and any pot that stays wet longer than it should after a watering.
