Plants for Partial Shade

Courtyards, side passages and beds tucked under eaves are the trickiest real estate in most Australian homes, bright enough that things grow, but never sunny enough for the plants you first wanted. The answer is not to fight the light you have but to plant for it, and this range gathers the fillers, foliage plants and soft bloomers that make part shade look like a design choice.

Small shaded spaces behave differently to open garden beds. Light walls and paving bounce useful reflected light around a courtyard, effectively brightening it half a category, so a technically shady courtyard often supports plants that would sulk in equivalent open shade. The bigger trap is water: beds under eaves and balconies sit in a rain shadow and can stay bone dry even in a wet week, so hand watering or a dripline is non negotiable there. Build these spaces around foliage first, layering leaf shapes, from broad and glossy to strappy and fine, in greens, limes and burgundies, then add flowers as the accent rather than the foundation. In pots, go one size larger than you think, since a 300mm or 400mm container buffers both moisture and summer heat far better than a small one.

Think in three heights even in a narrow space: something reaching 1.5m to 2m for the back wall, mid fillers around 60cm to 1m, and spillers or groundcovers at the front edge. A repeated plant used at all three positions in different sizes ties a small space together instantly and avoids the cluttered look narrow beds fall into.
