Moderate Growing Plants

Fast growing plants promise instant gardens and then bill you for it in pruning, root problems and short lifespans, while very slow growers test anyone's patience. Moderate growing plants occupy the sensible middle: typically 30cm to 60cm of new growth per year, enough to see real progress each season without the maintenance treadmill.

This growth band suits gardeners who want to shape a garden rather than constantly restrain one. A moderate growing hedge planted from 200mm pots will usually form a respectable screen in three to four years and then hold its form with one or two trims annually, compared with the four to six cuts a year that rampant growers demand. The same steadiness shows underground; moderate growers rarely produce the aggressive root systems that make some fast species risky near paving, pools and pipes. When spacing, plant at roughly two thirds of mature width, for instance 1m apart for shrubs maturing at 1.5m wide, which closes gaps within a few seasons while leaving each plant room to develop properly. Across most Australian climates these varieties put on their main flush in spring and a second in early autumn, so time feeding a few weeks ahead of those windows.
