Why growth rate is the most underrated filter
Growth rate decides how much of your future weekend a plant owns. Fast growers deliver privacy in two seasons, then ask for three or four cuts a year for the rest of their lives, and their width and root vigour match their speed. Slow growers behave beautifully but test your patience for a decade. Moderate growers, putting on roughly 30 to 60cm a year, are the compromise that suits most gardens: visible progress every season, one or two trims a year once established, and root systems that rarely threaten paths, pipes or pools.
What sits in this collection

Where moderate growers earn their keep
They are the right answer wherever a plant must live close to something you care about. Beside paths, pools, driveways and clotheslines, a moderate grower stays roughly where you put it instead of swallowing the space. In small gardens they keep the design legible for years. For hedges between 1m and 3m they are usually the better long term choice: a moderate hedge closes in two to four seasons, then holds its line on a single spring trim, where a fast hedge becomes a standing appointment with the shears. If you need a screen this season, accept the maintenance trade and shop fast growing plants instead. If you want to prune almost never, look at slow growing trees.
Climate notes for a national range
A collection this size spans every zone, so filter rather than assume. In tropical and subtropical gardens, lilly pillies, magnolias and citrus all cruise along comfortably in the moderate band. Warm temperate coastal gardens can grow nearly everything here. In cool temperate and frost prone districts, lean on the proven performers: crepe myrtles, olives, photinia and the deciduous ornamentals, and give citrus the warmest north facing spot you have. In dry Mediterranean climates around Perth and Adelaide, olives, lavender, rosemary and westringia deliver the same steady pace on far less water.
Planting and care at a moderate pace
Plant into a hole twice the pot's width, water in deeply, mulch to 75mm and water twice a week through the first summer. Feed once in early spring with a controlled release fertiliser; moderate growers rarely justify a second feed, and overfeeding buys soft growth that pests love. For hedges, space plants 75cm to 1m apart and start light tip pruning in the first year so the base thickens while the hedge rises. Expect the advertised 30 to 60cm a year from the second year onward. In year one, most of the growth happens underground.
Common questions
How long will a moderate growing hedge take to reach 2m?
From 200mm pots, roughly three to four seasons with water and feed behind it. From advanced 300mm or 45 litre stock you can start at or near target height and simply let it thicken.
Are moderate growers better near pools and paving?
Generally yes. The root vigour that lifts paving usually belongs to fast growing trees. Most plants here have contained, well mannered root systems, and the product pages flag the exceptions.
Can I speed a moderate grower up?
A little. Consistent deep watering, spring feeding and mulch push growth toward the top of the 30 to 60cm range, but genetics set the ceiling. If you need more pace than that, choose a fast species rather than force feeding a moderate one.
Do moderate growers need less water too?
Growth rate and water needs are separate ratings. Plenty of plants here are drought tolerant once established, olives and rosemary famously so, but check the water filter rather than assuming, and water everything properly for its first two summers.
