The Thai Limestone Lotus Bowl is a wide, open planting bowl hand made in Thailand and finished in a softly aged limestone glaze. It measures 92cm across and 66cm high in the one size available, and the low shape is built for planting that spreads sideways rather than shooting up.

Why you'll love it

  • A bowl, not a pot. The 92cm mouth gives a wide planting surface, so succulents and trailing plants fill and spill rather than being funnelled upwards.
  • Aged mineral finish. The limestone surface is matt and softly weathered from the start, so it looks settled beside stone paving and gravel.
  • A feature on its own. At close to a metre across it holds a courtyard or a lawn edge before anything is planted in it.

Sizes and what fits in them

The Lotus Bowl is made in a single size, and the figures are outside dimensions.

  • 92cm across. Room for a group planting: three or five plants set out in a drift work better here than one centred specimen.
  • 66cm high. Tall enough to lift the display to hip height, so a trailing plant has somewhere to fall.
  • Best planting. Agaves, succulents, low grasses and spreading groundcovers suit the shape. Deep rooted trees do not.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Limestone glazed ceramic, shaped and finished by hand. Expect tonal variation and a rim that is not perfectly true, both part of hand made work.

Outdoors. Sold as an outdoor bowl. We publish no frost rating for the Thai limestone range, so in frost prone gardens treat it like any glazed ceramic and keep water from sitting in it over winter. A wide bowl also dries faster than a deep pot in summer.

Drainage. Keep the drainage holes clear and stand the bowl on feet so water escapes. Cover them with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix rather than garden soil, and choose plants suited to containers: aggressive roots damage any planter.
