StoneLite Half Cylinders

The StoneLite Half Cylinder is a wall planter cast from glass-reinforced concrete: a cylinder sliced down its length so the back sits flush against a wall or a fence. It comes in two sizes, 56cm and 75cm long, with the look of solid concrete at about a third of the weight. Use it where a round pot would jut into the walkway.

Why you'll love it

• Made for tight ground. The flat back takes only 28cm or 38cm of depth, the difference between a planted wall and a blocked path.
• Proper soil volume. Seventy litres in the small size and 85 litres in the large, so it is a planter rather than a trough that dries out fast.

Sizes and what fits in them

Measurements are outside dimensions, length by width by height.

• 56 x 28 x 56cm, 70 L, 11kg. A run of clipped box, strappy plants, or trailing groundcover along a courtyard wall. Two or three end to end read as a continuous bed.
• 75 x 38 x 75cm, 85 L, 20kg. Chest height against a fence, with depth for a tall grass, a compact shrub or a screening plant above the boundary line.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Glass-reinforced concrete, cast thin over a fibre matrix, which lets a pot this size stay at 20kg and still shrug off a knock.

Outdoors. Custom-spray colours are finished in Dulux Weathershield, with a 15 year guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking. That covers the coating staying put, not the shade, and raw concrete patinas as concrete does. Almost any custom colour can be sprayed to order for an extra $60.

Drainage. It has drainage holes. Keep them clear and raise the planter on feet so water escapes rather than pooling against the wall, cover each hole with fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then add 50mm of 10mm gravel and fill with a premium potting mix, never garden soil.

What to expect when it arrives

Pots ship empty. Raw concrete is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days, and custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. Planters are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Set the 75 x 38 x 75cm in place before filling it: 20kg empty is manageable, 85 litres of wet mix on top is not.
