Premium Glaze Roman Jar

The Premium Glaze Roman Jar is a tall double-fired ceramic jar built in three sizes, from 47 x 95cm through to 60 x 117cm. All three stand roughly twice as tall as they are wide, and each comes in ten hand-applied glaze colourways running from ocean blues to gunmetal. It is the shape to use when a garden needs height without a plant doing the work.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three sizes, quoted as diameter by height in outside dimensions. No volume figures are published, so work from the width.

• 47 x 95cm, 52kg. The narrowest. Best as a standing feature, or planted with something upright and undemanding.
• 52 x 101cm, 62kg. More width at the shoulder, which gives roots room for a small evergreen without the jar looking overloaded.
• 60 x 117cm, 90kg. The tallest and widest, for a position where the jar must hold its own against a long fence.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Double-fired ceramic with a hand-applied glaze. Each figure is an outside dimension, so allow for wall thickness.

Outdoors. The double firing is what makes the glaze frost resistant, and the colours stay true outside rather than dulling off. Variation in depth and pooling between jars is normal. A tall ceramic form is top heavy, so set it on level, firm ground.

Drainage. It drains from the base. Keep the holes clear and raise the jar on pot feet so water escapes freely. Cover the holes with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, because both clog. Lay 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a quality premium potting mix, never garden soil.

Jars ship empty, dispatched in 2 to 5 business days and delivered Australia wide,. Even the 47 x 95cm size is 52kg bare and takes two people to walk into position. Stay with plants suited to pots, since aggressive roots can damage any planter.
