A cast iron plant trolley takes the strain out of moving a heavy pot. This one is 30.5cm across and 7cm high, rated to 50kg, and rolls on multi-directional wheels with a safety locking brake so the pot stays where you park it. It is for anyone with large potted plants who would rather roll than lift.

What it does

  • Carries 50kg. Solid cast iron gives a stable base under a full pot, which is where lightweight saucer trolleys give up.
  • Locks when you want it still. The safety locking wheel brake holds the pot in position, so a knock does not send a heavy plant rolling across the deck.
  • Moves in any direction. Multi-directional wheels turn on the spot, which matters on a narrow balcony, and roll without marking the surface underneath.
  • Lifts the pot clear of the floor. The 7cm height keeps the base off decking, so you can sweep underneath and air gets to the timber.

How to use it

Match the trolley to the pot first. At 30.5cm across it suits a pot with a base up to roughly 30cm wide, so measure the base, not the rim, since most pots taper. Sit the empty pot on the trolley, then plant it in place: far easier than lifting a planted pot on afterwards.

Add up the weight of pot, mix and plant and keep it under 50kg, remembering that potting mix is much heavier wet than dry. Release the brake to move, lock it once positioned. Wipe the trolley with a damp cloth as needed, and check the brake holds.
