The Fiskars Pro mini mattock is a short handled digging tool for ground that a spade bounces off. One end is a pick for breaking hard surfaces, the other a mattock blade that works like a hoe through compacted soil. At 358mm long and 248mm wide it is built for planting holes and tight work, not for trenching a paddock.

What it does

  • IsoCore shock control. Fiskars rates the system at up to 2 times less shock and vibration to the hands than a traditional wood handled tool.
  • Two working ends. The pick breaks through hardened crust and clay, then the mattock end loosens the broken ground like a hoe.
  • Forged and heat treated steel. The head is forged, heat treated and rust resistant coated, so it holds an edge and survives a night left out.
  • Riveted head that stays put. The head is riveted on as one inseparable unit, so it will not slide or snap off mid swing, the usual failure on a cheap mattock.

How to use it

Grip low on the handle and let the weight of the head do the work rather than driving it with your shoulders. Break the surface with the pick first, working in from the edge rather than the middle, then flip to the mattock blade to drag the loosened soil clear. On heavy clay, work a small square at a time instead of going for full depth in one pass.

Knock the soil off and wipe the head dry after use, then store it somewhere dry to protect the coating.

Use for planting into hard ground. Opening holes in compacted clay for shrubs and advanced stock, and breaking up a bed before it is improved.
