The Fiskars PowerGearX UPX82 is a pole pruner for branches just out of arm's reach, cutting at roughly 3.5m to 4m above the ground depending on your height. You stand on solid ground with both hands on the pole, which is steadier than balancing on a ladder with a lopper. It suits small and medium trees around a house.

What it does

  • Overhead cutting with no ladder. Reach of about 3.5m to 4m depending on user height, so everyday overhead cuts happen with both feet planted.
  • Cutting head adjusts up to 230 degrees. Swinging the head lets you meet a branch square rather than at an awkward angle, which leaves a cleaner wound.
  • Integrated rope system. The rope runs to the head so you pull with both hands, keeping the pole balanced and the blade where you aimed it.
  • Visible in the canopy. The orange blade support stands out against foliage, so you can see what the head has hold of. Listed dimensions are 105mm wide, 125mm high and 70mm long, and it carries a 25 year warranty.

How to use it

Set your feet clear of the fall line, never directly beneath the branch. Bring the head up, rotate it so the blade sits just outside the branch collar, and draw the rope with both hands in one steady pull. Reduce a heavy limb in short lengths from the outside in, so the last cut carries almost no weight.

Wipe sap off the blade after use and store the pruner dry. A light oil occasionally keeps the cut smooth.

Use on small and medium trees. Lifting a canopy, taking out dead wood and keeping growth off a roof, a path or a fence line.
