The Fiskars PowerGear anvil lopper is a compact two handed lopper built for one job in particular: cutting hard, dry and dead wood cleanly. The geared mechanism multiplies the force you put through the handles, so branches that stall a plain pivot lopper come away without a wrestle. It suits home gardeners doing regular maintenance rather than clearing acreage.

What it does

  • Anvil action for dead wood. One hardened steel blade drives down onto a flat bed, which is the right mechanism for hard, dry and dead timber.
  • PowerGear mechanism. The gearing increases cutting power at the blade, so the same cut takes less effort through the wrists and shoulders.
  • FiberComp handles, steel blade. Handles in FiberComp and a hardened steel blade keep the tool light in the hand without giving way under load.
  • Compact 395mm frame. It measures 395mm long, 180mm wide and 24mm deep, small enough to work inside a congested shrub.

How to use it

Seat the branch deep in the jaw, close to the pivot, where the gearing gives the most leverage. Cut just outside the swollen collar at the base of the branch rather than flush with the trunk, so the wound closes properly. If the handles will not close under steady pressure, move to a pruning saw rather than forcing it.

Wipe the blade clean and dry after every use, since sap left on steel corrodes it. Store it somewhere dry and lightly oil the blade occasionally.

Use on dry and dead wood. Deadwooding shrubs, small trees and woody perennials, and clearing spent growth at the end of a season.
