The Georgian Hanging Basket is a wrought iron basket in a black crackle finish, supplied with a liner and heavy gauge hanging hardware. It comes in three sizes, 350mm, 400mm and 450mm across, and it is built for trailing and cascading plants that a solid pot would hide.

  • Liner included. The liner comes with the basket, holds the mix in place and helps the root zone retain moisture.

  • Frees up floor space. On a balcony, veranda or pergola the planting goes overhead.

Sizes and what fits in them

All three are shallow relative to their width, which is normal for a basket.

  • 350mm. 35cm across and 15cm deep, about 10 to 12 litres. A single trailing plant such as ivy, or a tight group of flowering annuals.
  • 400mm. 40cm across and 15cm deep, about 12 to 14 litres. Room for mixed planting: petunias or lobelia around the rim with something upright in the centre.
  • 450mm. 45cm across and 23cm deep, about 18 to 22 litres. The deepest of the three, and the one for ferns or a display held through a full season.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. A wrought iron frame in a black crackle finish, with the liner supplied. Wipe the frame with a damp cloth as needed.

Outdoors. It is made for outdoor use and for covered indoor positions such as an enclosed patio. Iron left in an exposed coastal spot will show wear sooner. Check the fixing point and hardware every few months, because a planted basket is heavy.

Drainage. This is an open frame with a liner rather than a sealed pot, so water passes through instead of collecting in a base. There is no plug and no saucer to empty, but a basket dries out faster than a pot on the ground. In summer, expect to water daily in an exposed position.

Baskets ship empty. The liner and hanging hardware are included, the plants and potting mix are not. Hang it from a secure fixing before planting: the 450mm size carries more than 20 litres of wet mix and is easier to fill in place. Baskets are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
