The Atlantis Water Jar is a broad, full bellied jar in hand made aged ceramic, double fired in Vietnam for frost resistance. Three sizes run from 44 x 49cm holding 70 litres to 47 x 88cm holding 180 litres. What sets it apart is how light it is for the volume: 180 litres of capacity in a pot weighing 52kg empty.

  • Frost resistant. The second firing closes up the ceramic, which is what allows it outside through winter in cold districts.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three sizes, quoted as outside width by height.

  • 44 x 49cm, 70 litres, 24kg empty. Low and rounded. Good for a clipped ball, succulents or a dwarf shrub.
  • 47 x 69cm, 130 litres, 40kg empty. The middle size, with soil enough for a dwarf citrus, a cordyline or a bird of paradise.
  • 47 x 88cm, 180 litres, 52kg empty. Nearly 90cm tall. Suits a small feature tree, an olive or a strappy specimen that wants lifting.

The jar narrows towards the rim, so plant while the root ball is smaller than the widest part of the pot.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Hand made aged ceramic from Vietnam, double fired. The finish is meant to look worn, so expect real variation between pieces.

Outdoors. Frost resistant and made for outside, where the aged glaze carries on weathering. Stand it on pot feet so water clears the base.

Drainage. The jar is drilled. Keep the holes clear, screen each with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then 50mm of 10mm gravel before a premium potting mix. Garden soil compacts and should not go in. Indoors it drains the same way and needs a saucer.
