The Atlantis Temple Jar is a hand made aged ceramic jar from Vietnam, double fired for frost resistance. It comes in three sizes, from 28 x 50cm holding 20 litres to 43 x 64cm holding 65 litres, and it is light for its volume. Buy it as a garden object first: planted or empty, the jar form does the work.

  • Weathered from day one. The aged glaze is fired by hand and reads as old rather than new, with tone shifting across each piece and no two alike.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three sizes, quoted as outside width by height.

  • 28 x 50cm, 20 litres, 16kg empty. Suits a succulent, a small clipped shrub or a herb planting, and it is light enough for a balcony.
  • 33 x 60cm, 35 litres, 19kg empty. The size most people choose. A cordyline, a compact grass or a single flowering shrub.
  • 43 x 64cm, 65 litres, 34kg empty. Enough soil for a dwarf citrus or a small feature plant that stays a few seasons.

Because a jar draws in towards the rim, plant while the root ball is smaller than the widest part of the pot.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Aged ceramic, hand made and double fired in Vietnam. The glaze is deliberately irregular, so colour and texture will differ from the photograph.

Outdoors. Frost resistant, and the aged finish keeps developing outside. Raise it on pot feet rather than leaving it wet on paving.

Drainage. It is drilled. Keep the holes clear, cover each with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clogs. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix rather than garden soil. Used indoors it still drains, so it needs a saucer.
