The Atlantis Stewpot is a single very large planter in aged ceramic, hand made in Vietnam and double fired so it holds up outdoors. It measures 95cm across by 70cm high, takes 400 litres of mix and weighs 100kg empty, so it is a permanent feature, not a pot you move around. Buy it for presence: at that width it reads as sculpture whether you plant it or leave it bare.

  • As a mixed planting. The wide opening carries a centre specimen with agaves or succulents around it.
  • Left unplanted. The proportions stand on their own at the end of a lawn.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Aged ceramic, hand made and double fired in Vietnam. The glaze is deliberately uneven, so expect variation between the photograph and the pot that arrives.

Outdoors. The double firing gives it frost resistance, and the aged finish keeps weathering as it sits in the garden. Raise it on pot feet so the base is not standing in water after rain.

Drainage. It is drilled. Keep the holes clear, cover each with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen rather than fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then lay 50mm of 10mm gravel before filling with a premium potting mix. Never garden soil. Under cover it still drains, so it needs a surface that takes water.
