The Atlantis Preserving Jar is a hand made ceramic jar from Vietnam, 63cm across and 65cm tall, holding 150 litres. Like the rest of the range it is double fired for frost resistance and finished in a textured aged glaze, so it arrives looking salvaged rather than bought. It is the quiet piece here: substantial, but square enough in profile to settle into a courtyard rather than dominate it.

  • For a softer look. One strappy leaf plant with something trailing over the shoulder suits the rounded form.
  • Left empty. At 66kg and this scale it holds a corner on its own, with no planting to maintain.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Hand made ceramic from Vietnam, double fired, glazed in natural aged tones with heavy surface texture. Empty weight is 66kg.

Outdoors. Frost resistance comes from the double firing. The glaze is built to weather, so the jar will patina in sun and rain rather than hold a factory finish.

Drainage. The base is drilled. Keep the holes clear, raise the jar on feet, and cover each hole with one layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix rather than garden soil. Indoors it wants a saucer.
