The Atlantis Low Bowl is a hand-made Vietnamese ceramic planter, double-fired and finished in a richly textured aged glaze. It comes in two sizes, 50 x 14cm and 58 x 18cm, both far wider than they are deep. Choose it when you want the planting to sit low and spread rather than compete for height.

Why you'll love it

  • The finish is fired in, not painted on. Double firing sets the aged glaze into the clay, and because each bowl is hand-made no two are alike.
  • Frost resistant. The second firing lets these bowls stay outside through a cold winter in southern and inland gardens.
  • Low on purpose. At 14cm and 18cm deep it keeps a planting close to the surface it sits on, so it suits a step, a wall top or an outdoor table.
  • Heavy enough to stay put. 15 kg empty in the 50cm and 25 kg in the 58cm, so wind is not an issue, though two people can still shift it.

Sizes and what fits in them

Both sizes are outside width by height.

  • 50 x 14cm, 10 litres. Succulents, sedums and low rockery plants. Ten litres is not much soil, so choose plants that accept drying out.
  • 58 x 18cm, 20 litres. Double the volume and a little more depth. Enough for a mixed planting of small strappy plants, a compact grass or a groundcover.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Hand-made ceramic from Vietnam, double-fired, with the aged glaze over a textured body. Variation in tone is part of the range, not a fault.

Outdoors. The double firing gives frost resistance, so it lives outdoors year round, and the glaze reads weathered from day one and keeps ageing.

Drainage. It is drilled for drainage. Keep them clear and raise the bowl on pot feet. Cover each hole with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clogs, then a 50mm layer of 10mm gravel and a premium potting mix, never garden soil. Indoors it needs a saucer.
