Fine Leaf Melaleuca

Fine Leaf Melaleuca (Melaleuca leucadendra 'Fine Leaf') is the tree to plant when you want height fast and a soft, moving screen rather than a solid green wall. It settles at around 9m tall and 5m wide in a garden, carrying narrow weeping foliage above white papery bark. It is one of the quickest natives we grow, and it accepts ground that stays wet after heavy rain, which rules out most other screening trees. Planted 3m apart it closes into a tall screen within a few seasons.

Why you'll love it

• Height quickly, without the bulk. It gets away fast but holds to about a 5m spread, so a boundary works without the tree swallowing the block.
• Finer foliage than the broad leaf form. Narrow pendulous leaves move in the breeze and filter light rather than casting heavy shade.
• It handles wet feet. Soggy ground after rain, a low corner, a drainage line: very few fast screening trees will take those spots.

Where it works best

Tall screening. Plant 3m apart in a single row. That spacing lets each tree build a proper trunk and crown, and the canopies knit together above fence height, where screening actually matters.

Windbreaks and shelter belts. A staggered double row at 3m filters wind rather than stopping it dead, which is what an exposed site needs. The flexible branches take a battering without snapping.

Avenues and damp ground. At 3m to 4m it gives a light, high canopy to walk under, and it suits creek lines and swales that pond briefly after rain.

Growing Fine Leaf Melaleuca in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the densest crown. This is a tropical, subtropical and warm temperate tree that takes light frost only, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and hard frosting southern gardens sit outside its range.

Soil. Genuinely unfussy. Sand, loam and clay all work, and it does not need sharp drainage. Backfill with native soil rather than pure potting mix, and mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first summer, then weekly. Established trees find their own water. A native fertiliser in early spring is plenty; heavy feeding only makes soft growth the wind tears.

Pruning and placement. Prune to a single leader for a tree shape, or leave multiple stems for a bushier screen. The roots hunt moisture, so keep it clear of sewer lines, septic trenches, pool shells and paving.

It is grown in six sizes. The 200mm pack of six and 250mm pack of three are the value option for a long boundary, and at this growth rate they catch larger stock within a few years. The 300mm suits a single tree, the 25L and 45L arrive with a formed trunk, and the 400L is a mature specimen.

How far apart should I plant it for a screen?

Three metres apart in a single row. Closer than that and the trunks compete, the crowns thin, and you finish with tall bare stems instead of a screen.

How big does it really get?

About 9m tall and 5m wide in a suburban garden. Figures of 12m and above come from tropical habitat, where it grows in permanently damp ground with no competition.

How does it differ from the broad leaf form?
