Queensland Silver Wattle (Acacia podalyriifolia) is the fastest way to put something beautiful in a hard, empty spot. It reaches about 5m tall and 3.5m wide in a few years, carrying soft silver blue foliage that looks good in every season, then covers itself in fragrant golden flowers through the coldest part of winter. Poor soil, heat, wind and long dry spells are all within its range.

Why you'll love it

  • Silver blue foliage year round. The felted, rounded leaves are the real attraction, lifting a bed of ordinary green even out of flower.
  • Gold in the middle of winter. It flowers when the garden has least to offer, in golden balls thick enough to hide the branches.
  • Very fast cover. Screening height in two to three years, the standard choice for a new block that needs privacy now.
  • Thrives where other plants sulk. Poor soil, reflected heat, wind and drought are all handled, with no prepared bed and no feeding.
  • Winter food for wildlife. The flowers pull in native bees and butterflies, and the canopy suits small birds.

Where it works best

Fast screening. Plant 2m apart in a row. The canopies knit within two to three years into a soft silver screen at 4m to 5m. You are buying speed, not permanence.

Windbreaks and mass planting. Wind tolerance and quick growth make it a useful first line on an exposed rural boundary, sheltering slower, longer lived trees while they establish. On a dry slope, plants at 2m spacing hold soil.

Feature planting. A single tree against a dark fence shows the silver foliage at its best, and it stays small enough for a suburban front garden.

Growing Queensland Silver Wattle in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun, always: shade thins the canopy and dulls the silver. Despite the common name this is not a Queensland only plant. It grows well through subtropical, warm temperate and arid or semi arid gardens, from coastal New South Wales to inland districts. It takes light frost only, so cold tablelands and hard frosting southern gardens are outside its range.

Soil. Poor soil is fine, and preferred to rich. What it will not accept is bad drainage. Plant on a mound in clay, skip the compost, and mulch 75mm deep away from the trunk.

Water and feed. Water deeply once or twice a week for the first summer, then stop: overwatering an established plant shortens its life. No fertiliser is needed, and phosphorus rich products can damage it.

Pruning and lifespan. Tip prune after flowering to keep it bushy and stop it going top heavy in wind. Be upfront about lifespan: this is a short lived wattle, typically 10 to 15 years. Treat it as the fast plant that buys time while something permanent grows behind it.

What to expect when it arrives

It is grown in 200mm packs of six, 300mm pots, and 25L and 45L sizes. The 200mm pack is the economical way to plant a screen, and because growth is so fast, small plants catch up within about two seasons. The 25L and 45L plants give immediate height.

Plants are packed to travel upright and delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery. Advanced and large stock is freighted at cost. Expect strong new growth within four to six weeks in warm months, and the first flowering in the second winter. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How long will it live?

Usually 10 to 15 years. That is normal for this wattle, not a sign of poor health.

Will it grow outside Queensland?

Yes, easily. It performs across subtropical, warm temperate and arid or semi arid gardens nationwide. The limit is cold, not latitude: it takes light frost only.

How far apart should I plant a screen?

2m apart in a single row. Any closer and the plants compete, thin at the base and are more likely to blow over in wind.
