Beaked Yucca

Beaked Yucca (Yucca rostrata) is the plant designers reach for when a space needs one strong shape and nothing else. A near perfect sphere of fine blue grey leaves sits on a single pale trunk, reaching about 3m tall and 1.5m wide, and it holds that silhouette all year without pruning or watering. It is slow: three metres over fifteen years, which is why a well grown specimen is worth what it costs.

• A sculpture that stays put. The rosette is naturally symmetrical and the trunk narrow, so the plant looks composed from day one and never needs shaping.
• Genuinely low input. Drought, heat and poor soil tolerant. Once established it wants no fertiliser and very little water.

Where it works best

Feature planting. The primary use. A single specimen in a gravel bed, lit from below, is the whole design. Three of staggered heights along a modern facade is the other classic treatment.

Pots and raised planters. Contained roots and slow growth make it one of the best long term container plants available. Use a wide, heavy pot for stability as the trunk gains height.

Rockeries and coastal gardens. Sharp drainage, salt air and reflected heat are conditions it prefers rather than merely survives.

Growing Beaked Yucca in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun, always. It grows across an unusually wide range: arid and semi arid, Mediterranean, warm temperate, cool temperate and subtropical gardens. The limit is not cold or heat but wet, so humid gardens need the sharpest drainage you can build.

Soil. Drainage is the one thing you cannot compromise on. In any bed that holds water, plant on a raised mound of coarse sandy mix with gravel through it.

Water. Water fortnightly for the first summer, then stop. An established plant rarely needs water at all. More Beaked Yuccas are killed by kindness than by neglect.

Maintenance. Old leaves dry and skirt down the trunk. Leave them for a shaggy natural look, or pull them off for a bare pale trunk, wearing gloves because the leaf tips are sharp. Mature plants send up a creamy white flower spike in spring.

What to expect when it arrives

Common questions

How fast does it grow?

Slowly, and that is the honest answer. Around 3m over fifteen years is realistic. Buying a larger plant is buying time, which is why advanced specimens are priced the way they are.

How cold can it handle?

It is frost hardy and copes with cool temperate Australian winters without protection. Waterlogged soil through a wet winter is the real risk, not cold.

Is it safe around cats and dogs?

No. Yucca contains saponins that are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, and the leaf tips are sharp enough to injure. Site it away from where pets play, or grow it in a raised planter.

Can I keep one in a pot permanently?

Yes. Use a wide, heavy pot with a free draining cactus mix and water sparingly.
