Coconut Palm

The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) reads instantly as the tropics, and it is worth being straight about where it belongs: this is a plant for far north Australia and nowhere else. In the right climate it reaches around 10m tall with a 6m spread of arching fronds over ten to fifteen years, and it grows quickly for a palm once away. If you garden in Darwin, Broome, Cairns, Townsville or on the Port Douglas coast, this is as authentic as a feature palm gets.

Feature and avenue planting. Plant singly as a focal point, or space them 6m to 8m apart along a driveway so the crowns never touch.

Growing Coconut Palm in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun and a tropical climate. This palm is frost tender, and cold is not the only limit: it wants consistent warmth and humidity to grow properly. It is not a plant for Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart, and subtropical gardens are marginal at best.

Soil. Free draining sand or sandy loam is ideal, and it is one of the few palms that genuinely thrives in coastal sand. On heavier ground, plant on a raised mound.

Water and feed. Deep watering two or three times a week through the first year. Feed three times a year with a palm fertiliser containing magnesium and potassium; yellowing older fronds usually signal a potassium shortfall rather than a watering fault.

Pruning and safety. Remove only fully brown fronds, because the crown feeds the trunk. Falling coconuts are heavy, so keep mature palms clear of paths, seating and play areas, or have the fruit removed annually.

Common questions

Can I grow a coconut palm in a subtropical or temperate garden?

Honestly, no. It needs year round tropical warmth. In subtropical gardens it survives without ever looking right, and further south it dies. For a similar look, a Foxtail or Bangalow palm is the better choice.

How long until it produces coconuts?

From a 100L plant, roughly six to eight years on a good tropical site with regular water and feeding. Palms in poor soil or marginal warmth take longer, or never fruit reliably.

How far from the pool or house should I plant it?

At least 4m from paving, seating and structures. That keeps falling fronds and fruit clear, and lets the crown reach its full 6m spread.
