Plants for Small Gardens
A courtyard, a townhouse strip or a tight suburban block can still carry real presence, provided every plant earns its spot. This collection is built for gardeners working with limited ground, where mature size matters more than how a plant looks in the nursery bag.
The single most useful habit when planting a small garden is reading the mature dimensions before anything else. A shrub sold at 40cm tall can reach 4m wide in five years, so favour dwarf cultivars, columnar and narrow upright forms, and trees that top out under 4m. Slim screening varieties around 60cm to 1m wide give privacy without swallowing a path, and layering three heights, roughly ankle, waist and head high, makes a 5m by 5m space read as a full garden rather than a row of pots. In warmer Australian regions you can plant almost year round; in cooler zones, autumn planting lets roots establish before summer heat arrives.
- Choose trees with non invasive roots near paving, plumbing and boundary walls
- Repeat two or three foliage colours rather than one of everything, which visually shrinks a space
- Use vertical surfaces: climbers and wall mounted pots add greenery with zero floor area
- Pick multi purpose plants, for example a compact hedge that doubles as a windbreak
- Allow at least 50cm between a plant's mature edge and any walkway
If most of your growing will happen in containers, the plants for pots collection narrows things down further, and apartment gardeners should start with plants for balconies. Tightly clipped forms suit small spaces beautifully, and our Buxus and English box care guide covers keeping them crisp, while the Japanese maple care guide explains why these slow, sculptural trees are a favourite feature for compact courtyards. Unsure which container size suits a given plant? Our pot and bag size guide shows exactly what arrives at your door.
