Plants Safe for Pets

Dogs chew stems, cats nibble strappy leaves, and puppies will dig up and taste almost anything you plant. If you share your garden with animals, plant selection is not just about looks; it is about ruling out species whose leaves, berries or bulbs could make a curious pet unwell.

Start by knowing the common offenders so you can plan around them: lilies, azaleas, oleander, brunfelsia and sago cycads are among the plants Australian vets see problems with most often, so keep those out of reach or out of the garden entirely. From there, build the pet accessible zones of your yard around robust, non toxic choices. Herbs such as rosemary, tough native shrubs and many grasses and groundcovers handle trampling and the occasional chew. Think about behaviour as well as botany: a dog that patrols the fence line will flatten soft borders, so line high traffic runs with hardy shrubs in 200mm pots or larger, which establish faster and shrug off knocks better than tubestock.

Zoning is the other half of a pet friendly garden. Raised beds around 40cm high deter most dogs from digging, a low decorative border fence protects new plantings while they establish, and a designated dig pit or shaded lawn area gives energetic animals somewhere better to be. Skip cocoa mulch, which is hazardous to dogs, and choose plain wood chip or pea straw instead, and avoid snail baits and systemic insecticides anywhere pets roam.
