Non-Invasive Root Trees

Planting a tree near a house, pool, driveway or sewer line always raises the same question: what will the roots be doing in ten years? The trees in this collection have compact, fibrous or naturally restrained root systems, so you can add shade and structure close to hard surfaces and underground services without budgeting for repairs down the track.

A useful rule of thumb is that a tree's root zone extends roughly as wide as its canopy, and often further in search of moisture. The species grouped here tend to root shallowly and gently rather than sending out thick woody laterals, but a few planting habits still stack the odds in your favour. Keep planting holes at least 2 to 3 metres from sewer and stormwater lines and around 1.5 metres from paths and paving where the site allows. Match mature size to the space, because root extent scales with trunk and canopy size, so a tree topping out at 4 to 6 metres is a far safer bet beside a footing than one reaching 15 metres. On reactive clay soils, keep soil moisture consistent through summer, since it is often soil shrinkage under footings, rather than roots themselves, that causes movement near structures.

• Check the mature height and spread on each product page before buying, not just the size in the pot.
• Where clearance is tight, install a root barrier at least 600mm deep between the planting hole and the nearest pipe or slab.
• Never plant directly over a pipe run, even with gentle rooted species, as roots follow moisture from any joint that leaks.
• Water deeply and infrequently once established to train roots downward instead of along the surface.
• Older earthenware pipes are far more vulnerable than modern PVC, so allow extra distance on established properties.
