What coffee grounds actually do

Coffee grounds are useful, but a lot of what circulates about them is wrong. Worth separating the two, because some of the common advice will damage Australian gardens specifically.

Do not put coffee grounds on Australian natives

This is the important one. Australian soils are naturally very low in phosphorus and nitrogen, and our native plants evolved accordingly. The Proteaceae in particular - grevilleas, banksias, hakeas, waratahs - are damaged by ordinary nutrient levels, and they cannot regulate uptake when suddenly given plenty.

Coffee grounds add nitrogen and organic matter that natives neither need nor want. Keep them out of native beds entirely, along with manure, mushroom compost and general fertiliser. Use a certified low-phosphorus native blend instead, or nothing at all.

Where they genuinely help

  • In the compost bin - this is the best use by far. Grounds are a nitrogen-rich "green" and balance carbon-rich browns like dry leaves and cardboard.
  • In a worm farm - worms process them readily, in moderation.
  • Around vegetables and exotic ornamentals - roses, citrus, hydrangeas and vegetable beds all tolerate them once composted.
  • Mixed thinly through soil as an organic matter contribution rather than a fertiliser.

The mistake that kills plants

Do not apply a thick layer of wet grounds as mulch. Fine particles mat together into a water-repellent crust that sheds rain rather than letting it through - which is the last thing you want in a country where hydrophobic soils are already a widespread problem across Western Australia, South Australia and parts of Victoria.

If you use grounds directly, scatter them thinly - a few millimetres at most - and rake them into the surface or cover with a coarser mulch.
