They are used to raise the pH of acidic soil so that lawns, garden beds and crops can make better use of the nutrients already in the ground.

Why you'll love it

It corrects acidity at the source. Calcium carbonate neutralises acidic soil and lifts the pH back towards balanced growing conditions.

It frees up nutrients. As acidity falls, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium become more available, so fertiliser applied afterwards is taken up more efficiently.

It reduces toxic elements. Liming lowers the toxicity of aluminium and manganese, two elements that cause trouble in acid soils.

It improves the soil itself. Plant Doctor lists better soil structure and aeration, and more active beneficial microbes, among the effects of liming.

How to use it

Test the soil first, because the rate depends on the soil type and its current pH. To raise pH by about one unit, sandy soils take 50 to 75g per sqm, loams 75 to 100g per sqm and clay soils 100 to 150g per sqm. Spread the granules evenly, work them into the topsoil where possible and water in well. Autumn and early spring are the usual times to apply. Avoid over-applying, because too large a shift in pH reduces nutrient availability.

What's in it

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which supplies calcium and carbonate.

Specifications

Pack size: 20kg

Form: slow-release granule, 1 to 2mm

Composition: calcium carbonate (agricultural lime)

Purpose: raising the pH of acidic soil

Suitable for: lawns, gardens, pastures and broadacre farming

Rate: 50 to 150g per sqm for each unit of pH, depending on soil type

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0691/2917/5359/files/plant-doctor-lime-granules-slow-release-agricultural-lime-20kg.jpg?v=1790779853
